The Scent of Happy!

Everyone who knows me will confirm that I love aromatherapy!  I am an aromatherapist as well as life coach.  It came about as a hobby first, but then friends and co-workers wanted my bath salts, lotions, oils and such.  The power of scent is amazing.  How does it work....this aromatherapy?  It is known scientifically that a human can differentiate between about 10,000 scents.  Scents enter our nose and travel up the olfactory nerve to the limbic portion of our brain.  The limbic portion of the brain is the part that controls our emotions, moods, memory and learning.

Aromatherapy also works by applying essential oils in a carrier oil to the skin, where it is absorbed into cells.  Like some chemical-based medicines, the molecules of the oils get into the bloodstream and bind with cell receptors at the organ or area where they are needed.   The oil molecules exit the body in 4 to 24 hours.  Oils must be used in the proper amounts and with consideration of a person's condition.  Some oils are stimulants and should not be used by young children or pregnant or nursing women. 

So ....what is the scent of happy?  It depends on the person and their olfactory experiences or memories.  For some, the smell of vanilla or cinnamon may bring joy to their mind as they remember baking or an experience with a family member in the kitchen or on a special day.  For others, the smell of coconut and pineapple may bring happy thoughts of the beach.  Generally speaking, the essential oil of orange, lemon, grapefruit, and neroli will lift your spirits and increase intellectual focus.  For happy relaxation, you can't beat lavender oil or lemon balm oil.  Some people love jasmine oil for their "happy place."   The fact is fun and amazing to experient with aromatherapy oils and products.  They add fresh scents to your home, your body and some of them have wonderful healing properties.
