Having A Career Crisis?

Posted on April 22nd, 2013

Having a career crisis can make you want to hide....Just this week, I have talked with several people that are having what they call a "career crisis."

One of them is working in what I would call a toxic office.  Negativity abounds from the customers to the supervisor.  It's non-stop complaining and bullying.  This type of atmosphere is not healthy for anyone.  If you are caught in this and cannot change the environment for the better, you might consider other employment options.

Another person just lost her job.  She is a bright and energetic woman in her 50's.  She is totally frozen in her job search because she gets the interview, but once the interviewer sees her experience level and age, she does not get to move on to the next step.  She has become painfully aware that there is age discrimination in the workplace in many industries.  She is not alone.  The business world would do well to learn to admire and utilize the wisdom of such a possible employee.....perhaps that could help change the economic climate for the better.  Hmmmm....

She is now getting career coaching and learning to reinvent herself so that she is even more attractive to employers.  Her self-esteem is getting a makeover, too.  All I can say is "Watch out world.....here she comes!"

I also spoke with a guy who said he likes his company, but is bored out of his mind with his job....another career crisis!  Boredom!   He said he really could care less about his daily tasks on the job.  His productivity is suffering....so his boss is complaining.  How can he get excited about a job he no longer enjoys and yet he needs it and wants the benefits?  What are his options.....well he has a few.

He can be honest with his supervisor and ask for some varied duties or apply in-house for another position.  He may need to look for a similar company with similar pay and benefits and try to apply for a position there.  He could get some additional training and switch to a more interesting job......so he does have opportunities to grow and enjoy work again.

"If you don't set a baseline standard for what you'll accept in life, you’ll find it's easy to slip into behaviors and attitudes or a quality of life that's far below what you deserve."

-----Anthony Robbins
